My First Month at Microsoft

Somehow I made it through the gauntlet of interviews and Microsoft decided to hire me. Yea, I don’t believe it either. Even after a month, it still feels a little unreal each morning when I swipe my badge – I keep waiting for the light to turn red and for someone to come out and say this has all been a big mistake and that they’ll have to take my badge….But so far it hasn’t happened.

Part II: The Day of the Interview. I got to the Microsoft lobby about 10 minutes early. After a somewhat anxious period of waiting in the reception room, I began the interview loop. I ended up interviewing with five people – some were managers, some were peers and some were dotted-line managers with whom I’d be working with as part of a matrixed organization. (read Part I here)
You Know You’re a Geek When….

It was pointed out to me recently that I am a geek. Of course this was something I already knew. And I’m okay with that. “Hi, My name is Thom and I’m a geek.” But I like to think of myself as a geek that is at least marginally socially aware as well being somewhat self-aware. No doubt, my friends and family can offer differing opinions on this topic.
Perceptions About Where You Work
Posted by Thom in Work Experiences on 2010/04/25
I recently joined a new company and it’s been interesting watching people’s reactions when they learn where I now work.
Previously I’ve served in the Navy, worked for a children’s toy retailer, for an IT outsourcer and for a large company that made cell phones and software among other things. Now I work for Microsoft. (And to be clear this entire blog is my own personal effort and is not endorsed in any way or edited by Microsoft.)
